PUWER Assessments and Inspections

PUWER is a legal requirement that requires all employers to ensure that their work equipment is safe to use and is used safely.

Employers are required to conduct risk assessments and to meet certain standards. It's common for employers to perform PUWER themselves or to assume their equipment meets the minimum requirements, but meeting regulations can be a confusing process if approached without assistance.

A breach of regulation could result in an investigation from the HSE.

PUWER stands for the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998, and is derived from the European Directive 2009/104/EC.

PUWER is a legal requirement that requires all employers to ensure that their work equipment is safe to use and is used safely.

The guidance states that a PUWER inspection of work equipment must be carried out when:

  • When it is moved or relocated

PUWER inspections must be carried out by a competent person.
